Passion for people and a love for equipping the saints exemplifies the life and legacy of the one sent to New Grove Baptist Church in 1980. A true believer in “A charge to keep … and a God to glorify”, Dr. James Washington Jr. continues to build upon the foundation established by Christ.

Having obtained degrees and credits from the University of Georgia (Ed.D), the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (M.Ed), University of Louisville (39 credit hour in Administration), and Florida A&M University (B.S. – Mathematics), Pastor Washington continues to learn, teach, and model the life of an under Shepherd guided by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Charged by vision Dr. Washington is a visionary servant that is obedient to the call of the Great Shepherd. “Write the Vision and make it plain” … The historical family of New Grove Baptist Church – Winterville, Ga. (c. 1871) was revitalized under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and calling James Washington Jr. to Shepherd the flock. Moving from once a month worship service to each Sunday, the church family erected a new sanctuary in 1986 followed by an educational / fellowship building in 1992. These buildings are equipped with a computer lab, computerized office procedures, commercial kitchen, educational resources and a library. Numerous ministries have been implemented along with Academic Enhancement services for children, youth and adults.

Gift in serving, Dr. Washington is a member on several boards, committees, and organizations throughout the country, serving to provide assistance to the people of God. Consecrated a Bishop (July 2005) in the Alpha and Omega Church Ministries International, Dr. Washington serves as second presider. Recognized for his faithful service, he has received awards from organizations in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Kentucky, Illinois, New York and Kenya East Africa.

Married to the former Ms Sharon Y. Devoe a most suitable and efficient helpmate, they are the parents of one son, three daughters and 7 grands. Family is vital to the Washington family which extends beyond the immediate family. The church motto is “Be Part of a Loving Family”. This motto is an extension of the First Family of New Grove and continues to shape the ministries of the New Grove family. Bishop James Washington Jr. continues to live by the motto found in the hymn: “to serve this present age my calling to fulfill, oh may it all my power engage to do my Master’s will.”
